City of Norton Splash Pad

Project Overview

A custom Bigfoot statue doubles as a water feature at the City of Norton Splash Pad in Norton, Virginia. The friendly sasquatch is a nod to the city’s history, as are the various woodland-themed water play features here. The GFRC footprints, the leafy BucketTrio with Acrylic and Tot WellSpring, and even the naturally colored WhirlFlex ribs recognize this Western Virginia town’s surrounding forest and mythology. But most importantly, these splash play products create splashy fun on hot days! From misting to spraying to dumping, kids will enjoy the many ways they can cool off at this creative splash pad.

Video features the outdoor Aquatix splash custom pad by Landscape Structures at City of Norton Splash Pad in Norton, Virginia.

[video: scene fades into a sped-up flyover view towards a neighborhood splash pad at a community park. A man stands near a tree with the splash pad in the background, white text on the bottom of the screen reads “Joe Fawbush, Mayor, Norton, Virginia”.]

Joe: We are very excited about our new addition here to our Norton City Park. This is our largest park downtown.

Joe voiceover: And if you look over here, you’ll notice that we have a, what we call him, the Wood Booger.

[video: a large bigfoot statue holding a bucket with streaming water pouring out of it. Camera focuses in on the Bigfoot statue’s face. Camera spins around to the front of the statue, then focuses on the inside of the bucket as water pours out.]

Joe voiceover: And we’re also known for Flag Rock. But this has really transformed the park, I think. That this fit not only in the park itself but our whole Norton theme here.

[video: camera pans up the post of a pine tree designed water sprayer. Camera focuses on a panel design like an American flag at the top of a post. A child places their hand on a Big Foot footprint impression designed in a fake rock at the bottom of the flagpole. View across the entire splash pad as water sprays everywhere. Scene switches to another man as he speaks to the camera. White text in the upper left corner reads “Jeff Shupe, City Manager, Norton, Virginia”.]

Jeff: We took this, what used to be our basketball court area, and converted it into what you see behind me now, with the splash pad, and we thank all of our guys who have worked on this internally.

Jeff voiceover: Doing this in-house, our partners, the vendors, products. Been a great relationship, great partnership. And obviously you can see that the kids just love it.

[video: elevated rotating view of the splash pad. Ground view across the splash pad as children play in the water. A girl stands next to a post in the streams of water spraying out of the top. She giggles as she gets wet. A girl holds a camera facing herself as she walks through the misting water. A boy stands in the stream of water pouring out of the Big Foot statue bucket. View across the splash pad as water sprays from ground sprayers and other water activities. Camera focuses on the fag panel at the top of the flagpole with the pine tree post spraying water out of its top in the background. Scene jumps back to Jeff as he continues to speak.]

Jeff: There’s not been a day this summer since we’ve had it open that you wouldn’t see five or six times the kids out there and it’s a race to the button as we call it.

[video: children frolic in the water on the splash pad. A boy walks up to an activation post where he presses the button to make the water flow on the splash pad. The group of children walk over to the splash pad to start playing in the water.]

Jeff voiceover: When the water goes off, the kids are just racing to see who can be the first to the button.

[video: scene switches back to Joe as he continues to talk about the splash pad.]

Joe: Very unique structure, the children and adults both like the way that the water sprays and the buckets dump on them.

[video: a girl runs through grounds sprayers. Focused view up to three cherry-shaped buckets, one begins to tip and dump water down below. A boy tilts his head down as the bucket dumps water onto him.]

Joe voiceover: Especially the bucket of the Wood Booger.

[video: focused view of the entire Big Foot statue. Focused view of the Big Foot statues face. Two boys play in the spraying water from the Wood Booger bucket.]

Joe voiceover: Sparks at Play, great job designing this. We’re very proud of it.

[video: bird’s eye full view of the splash pad. Back to Joe.]

Joe: We believe this will be an asset to this park for many, many years to come.

[video: screen jumps to white, a black line draws itself in the center of the screen. The Sparks at Play logo slides out from the black line to the right of the screen. The Aquatix logo slides out to the left of the black line as the black line turns into a plus sign. Screen fades to black and the video ends.]
